CHAPTER 15

Knox couldn’t remember ever being so ridiculously content and so stomping furious at the same time before. After a year of dreaming about getting Greer into his bed, it had happened. It wasn’t his bed or what he had envisioned, but it was just as good. Maybe even better. He couldn’t even kid himself, everything he did with Greer was better than what he had imagined.

Only now they were being interrupted by pounding on the door.

He climbed out of bed and left Greer grumbling. He checked his phone, finding he had only been asleep an hour. What could be so important that he needed to be rousted out of bed at four in the morning? Looking out the peephole, he found Deacon pacing outside the door. With a sigh, he unlocked the door and pulled it open.

“Hey, so I was thinking about what happened yesterday,” Deacon started. “I’ve been wondering if the whole thing was a setup. Do you think Broussard sent those men to take us out? It would be stupid to waste so much money in revenue flipping the truck. But maybe they weren’t supposed to damage the truck, just kill us by aiming at the windshield.”

Knox stood scowling at him in the doorway, arms crossed over his chest.

Looking up, Deacon took a surprised step back at Knox’s snarl. “Whoa.”

“It’s four in the morning, Deacon. This can’t wait until later?”

“Hey, what’s going on out here?” a groggy-looking Greer asked, peering around Knox. At least she had managed to pull on one of his T-shirts. He had left her completely naked. He would very much like to get back there. “Deacon? What are you doing here? What time is it?”

“Go back to bed, sugar. I’ll deal with this.”

“Have I interrupted something tonight?” Deacon gave Knox a pointed look.

“Yeah. Sleep,” Knox answered.

“Since when does sleep leave bruises like that?” Deacon asked, motioning to Greer. Her hand automatically went to her neck. “Did you do this?” he snarled at Knox.

How could Deacon think that he would ever hurt a woman like that? Grabbing him by the front of his T-shirt, Knox dragged Deacon inside the apartment. He was careful not to knock into Greer in the process.

“I asked you a question,”Deacon said.

Knox had to give it to Deacon, the kid did not back down from a fight.

“What have you seen that would make you believe I would do that?” Knox asked. He plunked Deacon down on the couch. Deacon studied him for a few minutes as if contemplating the question before he shrugged.

“Nothing, I suppose,” he admitted. “But if you ever do—”

“I won’t,” Knox cut him off before he could start back up again.

“Wait, did you say something about flipping a truck over?” Greer asked, splitting a look between the two men.

“Deacon,” Knox warned. It did him no good. He had planned to tell her about it, of course. But there had been a hell of a lot of distractions getting in the way.

“Everything was fine until we started back out.
